The missions were from adepticon 2013. This mission was dawn of war deployment with two book missions played simultaneously, emperors will and purge the alien objectives. Mysterious objectives were used. the games were scored by giving 10 pt for winning each of the objective games. if the game was tied after that score calculation, secondary objectives were counted at two points per secondary achieved. eg. If one player wins "scouring" and the other wins "big guns..." then they are tied at 10pts each until it is determined that player one has more secondary objectives.

For this game there was kill points so Ive put up a tally to give you a benefit i didn't have since i lost track of where I was in comparison to my opponent. This should give you a sence of how i was doing in the battle.
He deploys first across the back, with the building blocking line of site to his infantry. I deploy in a denied flank position trying to distance myself from his wraiths. Prescience is my pychic power. I scout up on the side. I cant steal so...

Ne1 A. barges move up and screen his wraiths then opens up on me only one barge is in range and has to snap fire but he still downs some devs.

Da1 DW come down and pounce on the soft side of the necrons with belial firing away at the crons. All missles are fired at the wraiths who fail an unsually high number of saves. leaving only three in one squad. oh and my objective is sabotaged, but would not explode all game.

NE2 Taking a defensive posture the crons fall back back with their infantry while their wraiths move infront. All three night scythes come on thanks to reserve rerolls. the A. barges cant kill off those last devs and only one termie goes down. (the emperor was smiling somewhere.)

DA 2 RAS outflanks to the side of my choice so naturally i bring them to the crowded side. termies heading towards the middle fire on the middle closest A. barge and the BK, RAS and command squad fire on the wraiths, while belial fires on Zandrek and the immortals. In the assault phase i make all my charges, resulting in immortals running off the table and zandrek unable to get up thanks to consolidation. Wraiths are killed before they can attack. A. barge is wrecked. That was a nice turn, and my opponent is cursing his luck.

Ne 3 wraiths with lord jump to top of the building to try and escape the fray, while the night scythes try to damage my backfield. the A barges retrograde a full twelve and fire at the middle hammernators killing 3 (i think i failed every FNP save this game).

Da3 DWCS, Belials squad and the RW head for the a. barges. while the black knights try to shoot down the night scythe, the other option would have been to shoot at the wraiths after trying to rad grenade them. this was probably the better option, but fool that i am i went for the flyer thinking that i needed to kill his mobility somewhat. of course the knights fail to glance or pen. the middle hammernators decide that no job is too small and decide to complete a 8" charge and explode another barge with two pens.

Ne4 Two scythes fly off but, one of the scythes stays on to help versus the tact squads but they save all wounds. wraiths seeing the knights isolated jump down and pounce. the BK are wiped out by the merciless wraiths. The ray of light is that in the challenge between the lord and the libby, the libby passes MSS, swings first, gets a wound through the lords 2+ save, and activates his force weapon banishing the lord to the warp for another VP and slay the warlord. Did my opponent make a mistake and forget to role ever living? He might have and I just missed it but looking back on it...

Da4 Here is where i make a major mistake. we forgot to consolidate at the end of combat with the libby and wraiths even though they are still locked. seeing this separation i moved my troops back towards that table side to shoot at the "unengaged" wraiths. realizing my mistake and grumbling at my stupidity i vent my frustration by moving the RAS forward and multimelting the last barge for a clean sweep of barges. I hide the final hammernator to in area without line of sight to protect him so he can contest/claim the necron objective. The libby dies to the wraiths in combat and the wraiths consolidate.

Ne5 The pic says necron 4 but it should say necron 5. The kill points should say N:2 DA:7... hey nobody's perfect. The wraiths move to close the distance to the tact squads to multicharge. two necron scythes come on dropping troops to contest the DA objective and claim their own objective. the distance to the DA objective means that one group of  necrons can only snapfire their guass and cause no wounds. the other group cant damage the bikes. the wraiths roll for charge... and get a three. they can make it into charge with one group but not the second. The two wraiths make it in and the Plascannon marine survives locking them in combat.

Da5 At this point another tactical mistake was made as i had one lonely devastator sarge this whole time who had been hiding on the far side of the small building. it was at this point i should have run him away from the rest of the troops in order to protect the kill point, i think that like my opponent i sort of forgot he was there for most of the game and didn't think ahead to far. Plus i figured i was winning at this point (which I was so if the game ended i was fine. the termies all move to attempt a desperate denial on the necron objective. The RAS squad fires at the necrons claiming the necron objective, but the plasmagun decides to overheat and explode, killing its owner.  while the hammernator dies to overwatch (cant remember exactly how this happened.) another decision i made on this turn was to not assault the necron squad with the tacticals near the marine objective. the choice was to rapid fire them or shoot with pistols, charge and hope they lose and then run them down. but i decided to rapid fire. this was the wrong decision. the AB tries to assault but doesnt make it into assault. the lone tactical dies to wraiths.

game continues.

Ne6 necrons start the turn down by three VPs. scythes shoots at the termies but does nothing. the warriors near the objective shoot and kill the attack bike. the wraiths multicharge all the tacts and devs while the warrior group in my DZ  claims the objective. wraiths kill everyone. my opponent is now in the lead, and i dont know it.

Da6 the termies move towards the necron objective. and shoot to try and bring a few down.

 game continues

Ne7 the only thing my opponent does this turn is get his flyer in the way of my path to the objective. this is a genius move as the side walks were not being counted as difficult terrain, while the ruins were. therefore to charge his necrons i would have to take the difficult route. this one move sealed my fate.

Da7 termies advance towards the objective. i was able to get close enough to contest but failed my charge.

Post game: so in the final tally i actually think i lost on VP because the Attack bike is worth one VP its self. Ergo Emperors will score N:1 DA:0, Purge the alien N:8 DA:7,Secondaries N:1, DA:3. This is the closest i have ever come to beating necrons in three tries, and i took heart from it even though i lost. the game was really close and my opponent (the awesome ChanceTragedy on DakkaDakka) made a great come back really showing how critical late game mobility can be.

Analysis: fewer mistakes in this one but still plenty of tactical descision problems.
1.) I think i may have assaulted after outflanking with my bikes. bad polythemus!
2.) my first major tactical mistake was trying to shoot down the scythe when i should have shot at the wraiths on the building. This was a bad choice for a few reasons. first at the time the scythe poses little risk, while the wraiths pose a big one. there are no troops to assault for popping the scythe they just go into reserve. with the help of the rad greandes, strength 6+ can ID them. I think i just saw an opportunity to kill more stuff and went for the flyer after remembering internet wisdom about how the BK are anti flyer. they arent. Next time even though pressed for time take a minute and think. secondly this oppotunity only presented its self to my opponent because I split my forces up, always a bad idea.
3.) i am not entirely sure how the last hammernator died, because i remember him dying to overwatch. if i had charged with the bikes first this should not have happened. Remember to plan your assaults carefully.
4.) another tactical error came about when deciding whether to shoot or charge the warrior squad in my DZ. As i mentioned the smart money was to go for the kill vs. the warrior squad. the wraiths were going to deny me the objective even if the game was to end after my turn, and if the game didn't end the wraiths would kill me anyway. I think there was room to charge between wraiths so even though the likely hood of killing the necrons was low it was better than what would happen if i just shot them. (which resulted in me dying.)
5.) i talked about it above but i really should have anticipated the wraiths multicharging my tacts and dev. gotta run the devastaro away in that situation.

Again thanks for reading and any comments and criticisms welcome.

  1. The game sounds a lot closer than the score says so be proud of your game. Granted you made a few mistakes but as itd your first tournament the pressure was high.

Cant wait for the next game.

    1. Sorry you feel that way. I make no claim to be a great tactician, i try to learn from my mistakes as we all do.
