Bond of Brotherhood, Encounter at Mylos v Orks and Nids

***Servoskull message to Azreal from Sammael.***
***
Lord Azreal, we have discovered new information regarding the invasion of the planet Mylos. It seems that the Tyranids have used some form of mind control on the leader of the ork resistence on the planet, led by the warboss, Hedgowja. With the new threat of tyranid invasion, the already present ork resistence has become an even greater problem. We attempted to intervene on the planet but at the time the time of the combined opposition offensive we could not contact the fleet so we needed to get aid from another chapter, the Emperor's Rage, led by their Brother-Chaplain Ragef*ck. What follows is my reporting of the battle that took place.
***

The game was played between myself and a guy who i had not met, who had an a DIY chapter but was using ultramarine tactics. The warlord for his army had a bit of an unconventional name, but i liked it all the same. the game was 3000pts no battle brothers allowed. objective game. there were 5 objectives one behind the mountain (center), one right of the mountain, one at the marine backfield, and one in either ruin in the opponent table half. This game was played before the newest Tyranid codex arrived.

Depolyment -After the scouting up of the ravenwing the opposition stole the initiative! The ork meganobs advance, and the wierdboy begins to spark and gibber.

Meganobs shoot and charge the ravenwing, destroying half the squad and causing them to flee.

Meanwhile the weirdboy, in an excited fit of warpsurge teleports his entire squad flanking the ravenwing and unleashing a hail of withering fire, killing half the squad, but their morale holds.

The ravenwing prepare fore their counter attack

After the devastation of the ambush the ravenwing lie scattered.

Within sight of the banner of devastation, the ravenwing fires a destructive volley on the orks, deciminating them to half the size. Feeling brash the whirlwind decides to target another group thinking that the raven wing will easily destroy the weirdboy and his group.

In ruins high above the field the devastator squad fire on the nob bikerz, while the marines and sternguard advance in rhinos.

Death from the Sky! the tacticals drop and fire upon the tervigon determined to bring him down. Their banner flies high, held aloft by Brother Marcus Decimus.

With the weirdboy and his squad still a threat on the charge, and concerned for the marines behind them the ravenwing squads attempt to subvert the attempt, but overestimate their  prowess. In reply the power weapons of the weirdboy and nob cleave through the marine armor. One squad is wiped out completely the other brought to two men.

At the end of the turn the ravenwing are withering under the ork assault. Meanwhile the terminators make their slow advance across the mountain separating them from their quarry, while the Rage marines begin to move out.

Ork reinforcements take to the skies delivering a punishing salvo against the marines. The position of marcus decimus and his squad are attacked by a swarm of termaguants and tervigons, while sporepods (proxied in this case) containing psychic shriek zoanthropes land behind the lines of terminators and the Brother-Chaplain, but the storm shields hold true. In assault the nob bikerz assault the flank destroying the rhinos and many marines while the ravenwing are decimated on the opposite flank by the weird boy and the nob leader.

Whats this!? Marcus Decimus yet lives! Carrying his banner high, the marine is quickly approached by sammuel and the black knights his safety secured the knights then attack the fleeing orks, who are caught in retreat after being fired on by the demi tactical squad.
The raven sword flashes and the weirdboy is no more, Sammael runs down the remaining orks, but they take one black knight in combat.
Sammael and his retinue have made short work of the orks, and saved marcus decimus but elsewhere all is not well. Hedgowja has continued to crush the marines on the left flank, while Brother -Chaplain Ragef*uck, fights to the death with his brothers trying to eliminate the zoanthropes in the backfield. However reinforcements have arrived in the form of a 4th company Storm Eagle. It fires on the nearby flying hive tyrant but cant knock it out of the sky.

Coming about the Ork fighter blasts forth a withering salvo at the storm eagle lighting up the sky above the battlefield, the resulting glances take 2 hullpoints, a third is removed by the hive tyrant behind the ruins who flew behind the ruins.

The xenos continue their assault,  another zoanthrope and spore pod landing infront of the ruins near the devastators. The one of the hive tyrant vector strikes the marines on the objective and destroys the whirlwind under a hail of devourer rounds.

Having victoriously broken the marine resistence the warboss watches as the librarian flees.

Meanwhile the battle against the terminators of the Emperor's Rage, is turning as the zoanthropes slowly succomb to thunderhammers.

The paper thin hull of the ork fighter has no chance against the weaponry of the storm eagle, and crashes to the ground.

Clearing the nest of  termiguants, sammael and the black knights route the xenos from the objective.

having finally destroyed the last of the zoanthropes Chaplian Ragef*ck and his squad advance and destroy the tervigon.

The marine allies recieve thier last asset, the dark talon firing on the termiguant nest before sammael's assault.

xeno 4 - No Pics Sorry! In reply the Hive tyrants focus their fire on the Storm eagle and it falls from the sky. while the Nob bikerz regroup onto the objective.

aiming to destroy the tervigon the the black kinghts fire their rad grenade on the tervigon, but it scatters onto the nobs. Taking advantage to its proximity to the banner of devastation the Dark talon opens up with hurri bolter and the rest of its arsenal taking several wounds of the nobs, but still they hold their ground.

Fearing for the life of Marcus Decimus, Sammael ensures the termiguants cant rally, staining the raven sword with xeno blood, killing the squad.

In an attempt to destroy the tervigon and hold it for the terminators, the black knights charge and one goes down to the smash attack.

One Hive tyrant assaults the terminators and denies the objective, while the other fires on the darktalon causing it to crash to the ground. Meanwhile the tervigon kills the last black knight.

DA 5 - While Decimus holds his banner aloft over one objective the demi tact squad heads to the back field. In the lee of the mountain, with the tervigon close by, samael assaults. firing true with his plasma cannon and tries to charge in order to take off its last wound an slingshot to the objective but sadly cant as he fails the charge. Hoping to snatch a draw the marines pray to the emperor for the engagement to end... it doesn't.

The second hive tyrant guns down brother Decimus.

Meanwhile the second hive tyrant stays locked with the terminators. The nob bikerz advance on Sammael and gun him down.

xeno 6 - No need to play on as the xenos have this one wrapped up. 2-1 xenos victory.

Analysis - Tremendous game to play, it was fun to have allies especially of the marine variety. The game was definitely an uphill battle especially when the opponent seized. I think the statisitic is that 80% of seized games are won by the team that seizes the intiative. Here are some thoughts on the tactical descisions in the game.
The hive tyrants are beasts in the air. they Provided the killing power for most of the game, harassing all over the field.
I should have tried to thin out the shoota boyz with the whirlwind before charging into the orks. It may have made it so i didn't have to charge at all. Especially if they had broken.
At the end of the game I should have just turbo boosted with sammael into the objective in the lee of the mountain. Still not used to playing bike lists so I need to get better with this. This was the better play to try to steal the game, but its likely the result would have ended the same way.
The storm eagle is fun to use but until they say you can use POTMS to fire blasts at ground targets, this ship is tough to use to full effect. I might have used a Nephillim instead but the nephillim would have been shot down by turn 3.
I actually felt the dark talon did well. It thinned out a lot of troops and made life hard for my opponents who felt obligated to take it out on turn five giving us the chance we needed to win the game (though we didn't).
I can't wait to see the new ork codex when it comes out. Should be fun to play against.
