Apocalypse of Umbral Void: The Battle of the Hive from Hell

Image
The marine/tau army featured Tau fire support with tanks and four Riptides in the back. The guard brought four Leman Russ tanks in the back. The marine contingent was several three man squads of grav armed bikers, melta armed Land Speeders and I think five? Drop podding dual-melta contempt or dreads. Also appearing was a land raider packed with 20 marines led by the dreaded primarch of the Emperors Children. Additionally, their team fielded an immobilized bane blade as a campaign bonus. The Necron/Ork/Mechanicum force was much more eclectic. Each general brought a Superheavy to the table just for the heck of it, so Ghazhkull's personal bane blade (containing of course a mob of Meganobz and the Big Boss Himself) and a Necron Transcendant C'tan. Beyond that it was a mess of transports, tanks, infantry and bikers.

Apocalyse at Umbral Void...

Image
There can only be war... but victory is within your grasp. We just played the apoc game this weekend. I'll have a pic and text report up soon.

Campaign Update: Week 6 Update

Image
The final week of the campaign. Will any team emerge victorious and separate themselves from the field of challengers? The war for Umbral Void rages on unabated... Missle Attacks: Commander Nail considered his options, then smiled darkly. Yes that target would be perfect, minimum risk to the alliance maximum devastation to his enemies. "Make your target 60deg N 15'.22" and 45 deg W 37'.11", right over the Dark angel spaceport..." "Coordinates entered sir." "COOMMENCE PRIMARY IGNITION," belowed the commander a manic glee in his eye. The reported blast left him dazed but he watched onscreen as the gyrometeric display project the rockets course. Right on target. "The report came in from the aerial surveillence sir... target destroyed." The commander leered with glee... Attacks: With the war on the planets surface drawing to a close the teams knew they would require  victories to seeout their dominance over Umbral

All this campaign and battle report stuff has got me a little burned out so I started working on these guys and my table terrain in order to recover from burnout. I have been planning to try to work on an Azreal - Ezekiel command - squad drop pod bomb. I combined a sternguard and dark angels vets box.  in the background is the company banner , a termie librarian, and termie chaplian.  Front Row: 4th Company Veterans Back Row: Interregator Chaplain Virilius, Librarian Aggripus, and Brother Bethor, holding the Company Banner  Here we see some deatil shots of Brother Bethor in conversation with other members of the Inner Circle, Turmiel, Azreal, and Chaplain Pious. I'll post up more progress as this project develops.

Campaign for Umbral Void: Week 5 Update

Image
The Fourth Week of the campaign has been Lost to the warp storms but the evidence sugggest a mighty brawl between the orks and necrons look place with the orks emerging vicotrious. In the fifth Week of the Campaign there were several interesting developments. Missle Attacks - Munitions stockpile of the 325th ICG, had gone unused for weeks and the directive from the leadership: clear the path of terringrad bridge. The Imperial Mercy and its firing team punched the coordinates but the missle first landed amongst their own troops south of the Bridge causing them to lose the Bastion in their control. The second missle agained missed the massive bridge sailing far to the northwest amonst the ruins of the Terringrad Hive and the Necrons fortified there. But the third missle found its mark, death marine forces were instantly vaporized but the reinforced adamantine bridge remained intact stubbornly persisting. The Vortex Missle platform Imperial Mercy and its evaporated targets.

Comic Batrep - Campaign for Umbral Void: Assault on Phobos Hive

Image
From his citadel high atop the Hive Lord Phobian looked into the strange Elvish eyes of the Psyker across from him. He suppressed a shudder of his wizened body as is body was wracked by a painful surge as the defibrillation implant supported his barely functioning heart. "Do we have a deal human? Your rule over Umbral in exchange for use of Phobos Hive. We offer your people a shard of hope to be free from this war and your enemies. We can free you from your enslavement to the imperium, and its mindlessness. You will remain in power and we will crush your enemies, if you will grant us the use of Phobos Hive. Craftworld Ji Zhan will only extend this offer once." The creaking leader could see that this would be his only opportunity, "Very well you have the support of the rulers of Phobos Hive. Eliminate the astartes Force stationed in the southeast and we can give you our full support." "Very well human. By the end of this planetary rotation you shall have your

Campaign Update: week 3

Image
Much action centered around the the battles of the northern continent last week with the Eldar losing out to the necrons of the Nekthyst Dynasty. The Orks battled on two fronts and were able to use a diversion in the southern continent while they battled the Cadian 325th to take land west of the the Killjar range. Meanwhile Coven of the Black Sun attacked the Ghazkull pushing him out of Hive mellaj and staking their claim as masters of Umbral. This week saw a reduction in volume of attacks as the Generals of Umbral Void carefully planned their next move.

Campaign for Umbral Void: Geolocations

Image
I was thinking that it might be useful to be able to describe things/battles based on more than just their orientation to the hive cities. So these maps serve to give a sense of the names of some of the  geography of the locations around the world map.

Campaign of Umbral Void: Defense of Killjar Generator

Image
At the southern tip of the Killjar mountains, Chief Librarian Ezekiel, has been overseeing the construction of the Castellum Stronghold around the Void Shield Generator in the area. Enjoying a brief moment respite after the construction, the speaker system, sounds suddenly throughout the base... The Ad Mech alliance unleashes seven S 9, Ap3 attacks, collapsing all shield generators, destroying all but one devastator on the shield gen, and destroying an emplaced lascanon.

Castellum stronghold update 2

Image
Here is the nearly finished Castellum Stronghold. The turret mounts aren't finished yet but the whole thing is a lot less pink so thats an improvement. Here is the overview of the entire thing.

Castellum Stronghold update

Heres the newest progress on the Castellum Stronghold. I hope to start painting this week.

Umbral Void: Week 2 update

Image
During the second week the pressure increased. Planetstrike was the order of the day and those that were on defense last week launched counterassaults all over the map. Here are the battles that took place: On the Northern Continent  South of Phobos Hive and west of the Golgotha Range, the Eldar Enclave unleased a furious assault on the Nekthyst dynasty and Nemesor Zandrek. East of the Killjar Range the Sautek Dynasty was active as well. Thanks to their newly formed alliance with the Techmagos Therax, the two combined forces to attempt to drive the Dark Angels from their hold on the Void Shield.  On the Southern Continent Capt. Ranuk unleashed his Deathmarine attackers on the Power station at the far southwestern tip of the continent. The Tau commander Ovesa lay in wait ready to repel the invaders. Under cover of night, Dr. Farnsworth and his Coven of the Black Sun sent a stealth force to attempt to abudct the host of the GreenWaagh that had settled in Hive Mella

Planetstrike against Chaos

Image
Opening Firestorm... Firestorm salvo collapses the void shield on the third hit. Deathwing assault first turn, lands all squads safely. Belial lands directly next to the demon prince. The assault squad has a mishap and is placed in the corner.

The Campaign for Umbral Void has begun!

Image
They came from far and wide, the myriad races of the galaxy, their invasion was swift and quickly they claimed their territory. Then then after the landing craft departed the generals began their assaults... The first week only empty spaces could be claimed, as we all got to try out the planet strike rules.

Table update: First paint layer

Image
There's been quite a bit of progress since the last update. I cleared off the sand that had covered the terrain boards and coated them with primer. One of the mistakes that I made was that I only placed glue on the underside of the table squares, then i primed the table grey. Unfortunately the surface layer of sand was still too loose so I added another PVA/elmers glue layer. Table before adding more glue to the surface, but after priming.

Campaign Redux: Umbral Void

Image
After aborting a campaign that I had tried to initiate earlier this year, events have conspired to make it possible again. I reworked the map and since I don't have the planetary empires stuff I thought it would be good to set out my own world map. Here it is. Northern Continent of Umbral with the countries of Phobosia (red), and Terras (blue). Southern Continent of Umbral with the coutries of Mellaj(green), and Alta (white).

Terrain project: Table update

Image
Been putting a lot of work in on the table. I have been able to plaster over the hill and a couple other surfaces to give a rocky effect, once its painted. Bark embedded in the plaster to give a rock effect.

Current projects: game table and terrain.

Image
Currently while on the job hunt I've been working on developing my own realm of battle board and castellum stronghold. I haven't made much progress on the apocalypse battle report yet but perhaps that's next up. Early Castellum stronghold.

Painting vow complete

Image
Final painting vow complete. Whew. Everything submitted could probably use some touchups, but I feel like they can be prettied up later. First a group shot. Command Squad Company Master Deathwing Knights

Update on Company Master, and other painting stuff...

Image
Hey so I was working on the model for the company master and after some edits to the extras I threw on the model I have started painting him. Here's where I am so far. All extras are magnetized so i can change his arms/weapon loadout in the future. The Jump pack and cape are also magnetized.

First ever game and comic batrep

Hey guys, I was writing to a friend of mine on Dakka Dakka about doing some comic battle reports (swatakowey on the forum). He had just completed a batrep and I wanted to show him my very first one so he could get a sence of how the skill of making them evolves over time. I was able to track down my first ever battle report, which also was the first game I ever played that I can remember. Eventually, I'll grab it and transfer it to this site but for now its a little trip down memory lane. Dark Angels vs Tau on Arcturus IV.

Quick and Dirty Batrep: vs Eldar 1850

Hey guys, I played a game today vs Eldar today. I was so sure that I would lose i took no pics! So instead enjoy a little vassal style batrep. The eldar players list was like so. Painting project final vow

Image
So I've been producing a lot of painting recently for a communal painting competition on the Bolter and Chainsword forum. This will be my final vow for the competition 5 man Deathwing command squad, 5 man Deathwing Knights, and I decided I needed a real new Company Master model for Indomiel (essentially the Captain of the 4th company).  So here's the initial models. Here is the terminator portion of the vow, the DWK are still on sprues. Here we have Indomiel, Co. Master of the 4th company. The arms are magnetized, and I was thinking about magnetizing the jump pack. This loadout gives Idomiel 5 attacks on the charge and the chance to swing at initive 5 with strength 4 and shred, or Init 1 and strength 8. I've also modeled him with a displacer field (3++), the cloak of heros (shrouding while solo, and 5+FNP), and an iron halo. May need to edit him a little bit and remove the Icon on his jump pack. I used the legs from the ravenwing biker sergent. Unfortunately they

Painting project completed

So here's something I've been working on over the past few weeks. I finally feel that it has come to completion. First we have a group shot.

Tactics and Statistics: Look out Sir Rolls, why you should always take them...

Image
Something came up in a recent game regarding Look out sir (LOS) rolls. I now think you should always take them. Here's why... While not a great example of the described effect below (sergent isn't in front), making saves does feel really good.

The Gordium Campaign: Battle at World's End

Image
In the early dawn, Sammael and Librarian Hephestion, over look the canyon edge in view of the bridge into the Tunguska glacier. Both are eager to continue their pusuit of the mercurial villian Bolivox, who, with every passing hour, gets closer to the polar fortress of Gastongen held by the forces of Chaos...

New Batrep: Hammerfall on Ix

I posted it early by accident and its now done but won't come up on the news feed so I thought I'd make a special mention for those who enjoy a good buddy action movie, but prefer to read the words, the next installment of the campaign of the Gordium Cogitators is up. Hammerfall on Ix

Apocalypse on Cypra Mundi: Post game thoughts

Note there may be some spoilers in this thread as I am wrapping up the post game and posting thoughts on stuff that we got wrong and Improvements. 1.) Turn times - at the outset we really should have had turn limits, turns 1+2 took a long time. 2.) Rules for scoring on strat objectives. The way we did it that was to have them be the same Points value all game. The rule book suggests multiplying the value by the break number on which they are scored. Eg. an objective is worth 1point on break 1 and 2pts on break 2 and 3 pts on break 3. 3.) We didn't realize that you could spend strat VPs for new asset purchases. These two things are linked, if you wanna be able to buy assets you need to have a greater number of VPs availible hence increasing the points. 4.) We didn't really play pure 7th ed rules. eg. "objective secured" for troops in battle forged armies. We played everything as scoring equally. This was something that would have changed the game alot. 5.) Didn&#

Apocalypse on Cypra Mundi: A Preview

While the full batrep isn't ready yet, here is a teaser of what took place. VPs could only be scored after each break.

The walls of Rasputin Forge at Cypra Primus

Image
Another thing I've been working on has been the walls of the Rasputin Forge compound. There are eight identical sections. Inside there will be the refinery entrance, the generator relay and the generator control node. Here are the walls them selves.
